Guide to Penny Pinch Traveling

Vacation or Business Travel
Money Saving Tips
Saving Money on your next trip is not Luck!

Wise Planning and Adjusting where you can around the common travel preferences will save you money.

Going on a business trip, remember Mondays and Fridays are the usual travel dates try to avoid travel on those dates. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays have usually been cheapest days of the week to travel. If you only need a couple days for your business, try leaving on Wednesday and returning on Saturday.

It's the same for vacation travel, if you want to get a jump on your vacation depending on your destination start after 7pm on Friday night or early Saturday morning. Returning on Saturdays should save you some money.

Set your alarm clock for 1am in the morning and shop for airline tickets when discount fares are most likely to be available. Airlines for years have held reservations for 24 hours allowing them to expire at midnight and reloading the seat availability {inventory} back into the computers after 12am. That means the most seats to sell will be available at that time, and using the old supply and demand practice the lowest priced tickets will be available when they are reloaded into the airline reservation computer system. Need to make arrangements at your destination, hotel and car availability, business associates time schedules, take advantage of the lower prices, make your reservations and hold them for 24 hours.

Calling for hotel reservations don't mention your membership discount entitlements until after you have been told the room rates. You know the "Entertainment Book"? It not only offers you restaurant discounts and "two for one" dinners, you will find hotel, auto, and ticket discounts or coupons. Another money saving opportunity! Check out hotel web sites for prices before you call, you'll have some idea what to expect and it will give you a good basis for booking. Check and see if the hotel has a shuttle from the airport, it will save you plenty in taxi or shuttle bus charges.

Going to Hawaii or the beach for fun and sun, buy your small bottles of sun tan lotion at your local pharmacy or 99 cent store before you leave home, it will be a lot cheaper than the hotel or resort gift shop. Remember airline security does have restrictions on carry on liquids. Pack your shampoo and after shave lotion in your checked bag and put your prescriptions and pills in your carry on luggage.

Renting an automobile, use the same procedures for shopping and discounts as you would for hotels. Remember renting at off airport sites are many times cheaper and don't fall into the trap of paying for auto insurance if your existing insurance policy or your credit card covers you. Take or borrow a digital camera to take pictures of your vacation and document any damage the car may have before you leave the car rental agency.

Shopping for airline tickets remember if you are flying to a city with multiple airports check out the prices to each. Los Angeles, Burbank, Orange County-John Wayne, Long Beach or even Ontario Airports will deliver you within driving distances of most visitor spots. The same in the New York area, Islip {MacArthur} for Long Island, White Plains {Westchester County}, LaGuardia, Newark, John Kennedy airports are within the metro destinations. Research, shopping and starting your planning early will allow you the best opportunities of saving money.
